Avatr 12 electric sedan from Changan, CATL and Huawei exposed with 578 hp

The Avatr 12 electric sedan from Changan, Huawei and CATL was exposed by the Chinese regulator during the domestic homologation process. It is ready to the mass production with 578 hp, a CATL battery and a futuristic exterior design. Let’s get to know the Avatr 12 better.

Getting acquainted with Avatr 12

Previously, the Avatr 12 was known by a code name E12. It is positioned as a full-size high-end sedan that stands on the EP1 platform, similar to the Avatr 11 SUV-coupe. In fact, the Avatr 12 isn’t a sedan, it is a liftback. In terms of appearance, it stays in line with the Avatr design language. It has the brand’s distinguishing thin headlights, a sporty bumper and a slick body shape. Other features of the Avatr 12 are cameras instead of side view mirrors, thin taillights units and an extremely small rear window.

Speaking about dimensions of the Avatr 12, they are 5020/1999/1460 mm with a wheelbase of 3020 mm. For a comparison, it is 81 mm shorter, 12 mm wider and 45 mm lower than the Nio ET7 sedan. Its approach and departure angles are 15/20 or 13/18 degrees, depending on the exterior trim package. Moreover, the 12 is a quite heavy liftback. Its RWD version weighs 2180 kg, while the 4WD one weighs 2300 kilos. Inside, the Avatr 12 got five seats.

In terms of powertrain, the Avatr 12 got two options. The first one is equipped with a single electric motor made by Huawei. It sits on the rear axle and generates 230 kW (313 hp). As for the 4WD version, it has two electric motors for 425 kW (578 hp). The Avatr 11 SUV got the same powertrain. The battery capacity of the Avatr 12 has yet to be unveiled. We only know that it has a ternary (NMC) battery made by CATL. Anyway, we may guess that the 12 will adopt battery options of the Avatr 11. In this case, it will have two optional batteries: the first one for 90.4 kWh and the second one for 116.8 kWh.

Our regular readers are well-acquainted with Avatr. Initially, it was a joint venture between Changan and Nio, founded in 2018. Later, Nio withdrew from this JV because of financial problem. Currently, Changan holds 40.99% of shares and CATL owns 17.1%. The rest belong to various investment funds. In this project, Huawei hasn’t got shares, but it supplies ‘brains’, electric motors, and other parts.

So, the Avatr 12 is finally out! It is ready for the mass production. After the market launch, it will compete with other high-end Chinese electric vehicles such as Nio ET7 and Zeekr 001. Currently, Avatr 11 SUV selling relatively good domestically, with cumulative sales of 10,755 units so far. The Avatr 12 will enhance the market performance of this brand.
