Volvo EM90 all-electric MPV (minivan) was exposed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Its body length is over 5.2 meters. On board, the EM90 has a single electric motor for 272 hp and a ternary (NMC) battery. Inside, it has six seats. In fact, the Volvo EM90 is the Zeekr 009 MPV’s rebadge with changed front and rear.
Volvo EM90 is the first all-electric MPV from the Sweden automaker. But is it still a Sweden car? The EM90 will be manufactured in Zhejiang, China. It stands on Geely’s SEA platform that underpins Zeekr 001, Zeekr 009, Zeekr X, Jiyue 01, Smart #1, Polestar 4, etc. It also adopts an electric motor from Geely’s subsidiary, Viridi E-Mobility (VREMT). As for the battery pack, it is manufactured by the joint venture between Geely and CATL. Let’s get to know the EM90 better.
Basics about the Volvo EM90
The exterior styling of the Volvo EM90 follows the brand’s design language. It adopts Thor’s Hammer headlights and a closed grille. From the back, the EM90 has vertical taillights. The overall body shape of the EM90 stays in line with the Zeekr 009 MPV. It isn’t a surprise since the EM90 stands on the SEA platform that also underpins the 009. The rear mirrors appear to be identical to those on 009.
The exact dimensions of the Volvo EM90 are 5206/2024/1859 mm with a wheelbase of 3205 mm. For comparison, it is 3 mm shorter and 11 mm lower than the Zeekr 009. The front and rear tracks of the EM90 are 1702 and 1714 mm, respectively. Its front and rear overhangs are 903 and 1098 mm, respectively. The approach and departure angles of the EM90 are 14 and 18 degrees. Its curb weight reaches 2763 kg. As for the gross weight, it is 3245 kilos. The Volvo EM90 rides on 225/50 R19 or 265/45 R20 wheels.
Volvo EM90 powertrain
The powertrain of the EM90 comprises the TZ220XSA02 electric motor for 200 kW (272 hp). As mentioned, it is manufactured by VREMT, a company under Geely — the same e-motor powers Zeekr 009 and Zeekr 001. However, the Zeekr 009 MPV has only a 4WD version, while the EM90 is a rear-wheel drive vehicle. The top speed of the EM90 is limited to 180 km/h. The battery capacity of the Volvo EM90 is unknown. CATL Geely (Sichuan) Power Battery Co manufactures this MPV’s battery pack. It is a ternary (NMC) battery pack.
So, the Volvo EM90 adopts technologies and parts from Zeekr. And the question “Is it still a Sweden car?” becomes more relevant than ever. Moreover, the EM90 answers why the Zeekr 009 won’t enter the European market.
The new MPV recently applied for a sales permit in China, so we can expect it will hit the market soon. The price tag of the Volvo EM90 for the Chinese market will be disclosed this year.
