China EV registrations in Germany in June: Nio 16, Xpeng 240, BYD 1,675

Most Chinese EV brands experienced growth in June in Germany, with a few exceptions. Xpeng was up 29%, Leapmotor was up 12%, while BYD was down 10% and Nio was 27% down compared to May.

In June 2025, 256,193 passenger cars were registered in Germany, representing a 13.8% decline compared to the same month in 2024. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations increased by 8.6% to 47,163 units, achieving an 18.4% market share. Plug-in hybrids surged 66.4% year-on-year to 25,608 units, representing 10.0% of the market.

In contrast, gasoline car registrations decreased by 34.6% (28.5% share), and diesel car registrations fell by 32.3% (13.9% share).

For comparison, Tesla registered 1,860 cars, a 60% year-over-year decrease. In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), Tesla registered 8,890 vehicles in Germany, down 58.2% from the same period last year.

The new vehicle registrations are published by the German Federal Motor Authority, which tracks new car plate registrations in the country and compiled by CarNewsChina.

June 2025 registrations in Germany

SAIC-owned MG Roewe registered 2,119 vehicles in June, down 1.7% from 2,147 units the month before and down 59% from 5,158 units the year before.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), MG registered 11,520 vehicles, down 15.3% from the same period last year. MG still sells some ICE vehicles in Germany.

EU import duties hit state-owned SAIC the hardest as it was a non-cooperative company. MG is subject to an additional 35.3% tariff to the EU on top of the existing 10% duty, making the total tariff rate 45.3%.

BYD registered 1,675 vehicles, down 9.8% from 1,856 units in May but up 294% from 425 units the year before.

In the first half of 2025, BYD registered 6,323 vehicles, up 426% from the same period last year.

BYD pays 27% tariffs for imported BEVs and 10% for PHEVs.

GWM registered 1,058 vehicles, a sharp increase of 459.8% from 189 units the month before and up 256% from 297 units last year.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), GWM registered 1,954 vehicles, up 42.1% from the same period last year.

Leapmotor registered 571 vehicles, up 12.2% from 509 units in May. There is no year-over-year comparison available.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), Leapmotor registered 2,067 vehicles. No year-over-year comparison is available as the company started deliveries in Germany in late 2024.

Polestar registered 517 vehicles, up 115.4% from 240 units the month before and up 55% from 334 units last year.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), Polestar registered 1,915 cars, up 20.8% from the same period last year.

As part of the Geely Group, Polestar pays 28.8% customs duty on its China-made Polestar vehicles sold in the EU.

Geely-made Smart registered 338 vehicles, up 2.1% from 331 units in May but down 79% from 1,626 units the year before.

In the first half of 2025, Smart registered 1,950 cars, down 77.2% from the same period last year.

Smart is a brand under Geely Holding that is co-engineered with Mercedes-Benz. According to the company, the Smart EVs are designed by Mercedes-Benz’s global design team, while Geely is responsible for the engineering and development of the new models. Smart cars are produced in China at Geely’s Xi’an plant, which started production in October 2021.

Lynk&Co registered 273 vehicles, a 72.8% increase from 158 units the previous month and up 2,175% from just 12 units last year.

Volkswagen-backed Xpeng registered 240 vehicles, up 29.0% from 186 units in May.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), Xpeng sold 1,065 cars.

Like Nio and other companies cooperating with the EC anti-subsidy investigation, Xpeng is subject to an additional 20.7% tariff on top of the existing 10% tariff.

Lotus registered 43 vehicles, a 104.8% increase from 21 units the month before and up 23% from 35 units in June 2024.

Maxus registered 22 vehicles, up 450.0% from 4 units in May and up 120% from 10 units a year earlier.

Nio registered 16 vehicles, down 27.3% from 22 units the month before and down 64% from 44 units in June 2024.

In the first half of 2025 (Jan-Jun), Nio registered 121 cars, down 48.3% from the same period last year.

Nio pays 30.7% import duty on its China-made EVs sold in the EU.

Chery registered just 1 vehicle, down 83.3% from 6 in May.
