Great Wall Motor’s Tank 500 is set to receive a significant update, as recent spy photos show the SUV equipped with a roof-mounted lidar sensor. This change suggests a move toward more advanced driver assistance features.
The latest prototype retains the familiar boxy profile of the current Tank 500 but introduces a new dark green exterior and a visibly mounted lidar unit on the roof. Following earlier reports of a partnership between Tank and the lidar supplier, the sensor is likely the compact ATX model from Hesai Technology. This addition indicates that the updated model may support features beyond the current Level 2 system.
While the front grille remains covered, minor styling changes are planned. The vehicle also features multi-spoke silver wheels, standard door handles, and fixed side steps. At the rear, the vertical taillights and tailgate-mounted spare tyres carry over from the existing version.
The updated Tank 500 is expected to adopt a column-mounted gear selector and a redesigned dual-spoke steering wheel. The physical button layout on the secondary dashboard now matches that of the 2025 Tank 300, hinting at a consistent design approach across the lineup.
The powertrain lineup is expected to remain unchanged, including:
The current Tank 500 is priced at 335,000 yuan (approx. 46,500 USD), and while pricing for the updated model is not confirmed, the lidar hardware could lead to cost increases. April sales data showed 3,350 units of the Tank 500 sold in China, a solid figure for the off-road SUV segment.
