Last month, spy shots emerged of a new third-generation BYD Tang undergoing testing. This month, pictures are emerging of what Chinese media are calling the 2025 model year BYD Tang, which is just a facelifted version of the existing car. It is believed that both cars will be sold simultaneously, although it is likely that the facelifted 2025 model year Tang will launch sooner than the third-generation model.

Although most of the changes to the 2025 model year BYD Tang center around the powertrain, there are still some visual differences from the existing model. At the front, the car has adopted a more blackened look where there was previously chrome. Chinese media believe that the light clusters are also deeper. Both at the sides and on the back, previously areas which had chrome are now blackened. The rear tail lights also seem to be darkened, and notably, the Build Your Dreams logo will be swapped for a BYD badge. Reportedly the 2025 model year BYD Tang has had its rear five-link suspension replaced. Also, as seen testing, the car sports a new cement gray color.

The current BYD Tang DM-i version measures 4870, 1950,1725 (l/w/h) and has a wheelbase of 2820 mm. Any difference in the 2025 model year BYD Tang will be minimal.

So far, we have seen two versions of BYD’s DM 5.0 powertrain with at launch, it being centered around a 1.5 liter naturally aspirated engine with 74 KW of power, and later a more powerful version centered around a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with 115KW of power. Given the size of the Tang we should expect to see the more powerful engine based version in the 2025 model year car. In the case of the forthcoming Han DM-i, not only does it use the 1.5 T engine, but it is also coupled with a 200 kW electric motor, and this may also find its way into the Tang.

Editor’s note:

BYD’s lineup is getting messier by the day. There are too many overlapping models with similar names and not enough differentiation. Having said that, it is not unusual in China for more than one generation of a car to be on sale simultaneously. It is possible that the new third-generation Tang will get some form of name to differentiate itself from the existing Tang. Certainly, it would seem that the new car is going to be significantly bigger than the second generation.
