China’s electric vehicle market will welcome the JMEV01 (previously known as the SC-01) for its official launch on April 15. Developed by automotive customization specialist Gongjiang Pai and manufactured by Jiangling Group New Energy, this two-seater electric coupe is expected to be priced under 300,000 yuan (approximately 41,350 USD).
Performance Highlights
The JMEV01 (see specs) boasts impressive specifications for an entry-level electric sports car. Its dual-motor setup delivers a combined 320 kW (435 hp), enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds. The mid-rear-mounted ternary lithium battery from CALB provides a CLTC-rated range of 520 km. Engineers prioritized weight savings, using a tubular spaceframe chassis and push-rod suspension to keep curb weight at 1,365 kg—remarkably light for an EV.
Design Language
The coupe measures 4,106 mm long, 1830 mm wide, and 1170 mm high with a 2,503 mm wheelbase and features classic sports car proportions. The production model retains the concept’s aggressive styling, including sleek LED headlights, blacked-out C-pillars for a floating roof effect, and distinctive circular taillights.
Driver-Focused Interior
The cabin eschews modern touchscreens in favour of physical controls, including a manual handbrake – a rarity in today’s EVs. The minimalist dashboard features rotary gear selection, and only essential driver aids like cruise control and parking sensors.
Development Background
Initially unveiled in September 2022 as the “Small Sports Car SC-01,” the project, backed by Xiaomi, collected reservations with a modest 199 yuan (27.5 USD) deposit. Now branded under JMEV (a JMC unit), the SC-01 enters a venture where Renault’s 1 billion yuan 2019 investment (50% stake) proved unsuccessful, leading to its complete 2023 exit (Caixin). The manufacturing partnership provides the startup with production certification while utilizing Jiangling’s established facilities.
