In the second week of July, the EV registrations in China were mostly down, with several exceptions. Nio was down about 4% and BYD was down 12%, while Tesla was up 145% and Xiaomi was up 37%, compared with the week before.

Onvo registered 1,130 units and Firefly 550. All together, Nio Group registered 4,090 units, down 20% from 5,110 units the week before.

Key events to watch:

  • Lower registrations from the week before continue. Tesla, Li Auto, and Xiaomi are the only brands growing
  • BYD brand has the weakest registrations in 14 weeks
  • Firefly is 57.7% down, Onvo is 13.7% down WoW
  • Xpeng down 10% WoW, but grew 242.4% year-over-year
  • Xiaomi YU7 registered 860 units, all Max variants. No word from Xiaomi if F2 is already in operation, or whether those YU7 were assembled in F1 as the first batch in June

The weekly sales were published by Li Auto. However, Li Auto ceased publishing them in March 2025 after the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) “recommended” that Li Auto, media and any third parties end it. CAAM says weekly data “undermines the industry order” and “fuels vicious competition.” Since then, Li Auto has published only its own weekly EV registration.

The weekly data are used by consultants, analysts, or investors to see the sales trend and forecast monthly deliveries. They show how many cars were registered for road traffic, which can be later compared with automakers’ self-reported monthly sales, which, unlike registrations, include cars for showrooms, test cars, and other uses.

Most of China’s media have followed CAAM’s recommendation to stop publishing weekly figures. CarNewsChina continues to publish weekly insurance registrations, based on China EV DataTracker data.

The numbers are rounded and present the brand’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
