I like Chongqing Auto Show. Compared with Shanghai Auto, which traditionally takes place in April, Chongqing is much smaller but more pragmatic. Shanghai is more about showing muscles, the latest technology, and concept cars. “Launch in 2025” was the favorite phrase there. There is lots of PR. But at Chongqing, automakers show more cars you can actually buy now or soon. My colleague Tycho would probably say this show is less focused on millennials. Let’s have a look at the three highlights of the show and one surprise.
Hon hai, overseas know as Foxconn, is a major manufacturer for Apple and other smartphone companies. Like many technological titans, they couldn’t resist joining the car-making race. Together with Taiwanese automaker Yulon Motors, they launched an EV project called MIH last October. MIH is a name of a modular platform for building electric cars. Foxconn stated that its goal is to gain a 10% share of the EV market between 2025-2027. Foxconn believes that the MIH platform is the Android for the electric vehicle industry.

Today, GAC announced through their official WeChat account they will unveil their new mass-produced car in June. The new car will be the fifth model under GAC’s EV brand Aion. The first four models were Aion S, Aion LX, Aion V, and Aion Y.
GAC Aion decided to play with us a bit and mentioned that the new EV car would be based on one of the concepts they presented in the last years but didn’t say which one. So we can only guess. Ok, the game is on.
The media were recently flooded with information about Chinese EV startups entering Europe. Xpeng delivered the first batch of 100 SUV G3 to Norway last year and another 100 in February. Next was Nio. They also chose Norway as their first destination. Deliveries of their 7 seater SUV ES8 will start in September this year. Nio declared no sales targets. Last was BYD who wants to deliver 1500 EVs to Norway by the end of the year.
On 20 May, Changan Automobile confirmed its new high-end EV brand, previously referred to as “AB brand”, named Avatar (阿维塔) Technologies.
In China, the central government has to approve every new car before an automaker can launch it on the market. The approved vehicles are added to a list, and that list is published by the government every month. The list includes images and basic specs.
Automakers don’t like this at all because very often the list shows cars that are still a secret. We don’t mind (: In this article the most important new electric cars from the list of the month May. The cars on the list will usually launch within 1-3 month of publication. Yes, we can see the future.
Wuling is recently full of surprises. Last week they announced plans for global expansion, and yesterday they unveiled a new EV co-developed with Alibaba. The new car is based on Baojun KiWi EV, which became a mini star of Shanghai Autoshow 2021 when Nio’s CEO William Li said it was the most impressive car he saw there.
GAC Group revealed that it has partnered with Huawei in developing Level 4 autonomous vehicles, and the mass production is planned to begin in 2024. Whether Huawei or GAC will sell the model wasn’t yet revealed, but most probably, it will be launched under GAC’s EV brand Aion.
Well, the price is the same. The new EV flagship model from Human Horizons called the HiPhi X Founder edition, started deliveries on 8th May with a price tag of 800 000 CNY (125 000 USD). Tesla Model 3 price tag is approximately 38 000 USD.
