The 2021 World New Energy Vehicle Conference, Co-hosted by China Association for science and technology, Hainan Provincial People’s government, opened on September 17.

At this conference, Gan Lin, deputy director of the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration of China, said that just like the increase in sales of new energy vehicles, consumer complaints on new energy vehicles are also increasing day by day.

The authoritative person said that consumers are concerned about the cruising range, convenience of charging, vehicle maintenance, and other issues, and recalls caused by defects such as power battery failure and insufficient braking force have occurred frequently.

How many new energy vehicles did automakers recall in the Chinese market?

Gan Lin said: “We urge companies to recall a total of 1,283,800 new energy vehicles, accounting for 22.13% of the total inventory.” China has more than 6 million EVs on the road as of 2021.

That means that in the Chinese market, one out of every five new energy vehicles is recalled.

How should China’s new energy automobile industry develop in the future? Gan Lin puts forward four suggestions:

1. Strengthen industrial quality, strictly protect intellectual property rights, and strengthen quality management;

2. Optimize product supply structure, accelerate product iteration and innovation, and create a good consumption environment;

3. Create industrial advantages, implement technological upgrading and quality transformation, and cultivate competitive industrial clusters;

4. Strict market constraints, protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers, strengthen supervision.

It’s worth noting that some of these recalls are virtual only as, for example, in June this year, Tesla recalled 285 000 Model 3 and Y over cruise control issues. However, the automaker conducted the recall by OTA update only.

  1. Tesla “recall” was interesting. It was initiated by Tesla and was just one of the many regular over-the-air updates that improve certain functions of the car. This time it was related to safety so market supervision department was notified. The end result was that people started asking why my car cannot do it and suddenly Tesla got even more free advertising. I actually met a BMW owner that had ordered Tesla after taking a closer look of what had happened.
