It’s reported that the Luxeed R7 may launch at Huawei’s new product launch conference on September 24. In the meantime, a video of the Luxeed R7 has emerged, displaying its off-road prowess. Luxeed is a collaborative brand between Huawei and Chery under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) ecosystem.

As a coupe SUV, the R7 is probably not thought of as very capable off-road, but the video shows that it can easily manage mild off-road conditions. These include continuous steep slopes, deep pit steep slopes, pebble roads, twisted roads, and craters.

Various smart features of the car underpin the capability. Using intelligent vehicle state perception (iVSE), the R7 can accurately sense the driver’s intentions and the road conditions. This enables the Luxeed R7 to go downhill at a constant speed. Through downhill adaptive energy recovery, it greatly reduces braking heat attenuation and makes it safer, while at the same time, through energy recovery, it saves energy.

Furthermore, iVSE can use the R7’s multiple sets of active and passive sensors to work together to estimate the vehicle’s real-time status and identify and adapt to the road surface’s status. This enables the car to intelligently identify the risk of slippage on muddy and slippery roads and so intelligently pre-distribute the torque of the front and rear axles, thereby reducing slippage and ensuring safety.

The R7 uses double wishbone suspension at the front and independent five-link suspension at the rear. Coupled with continuously variable damping and air suspension, it’s claimed that these give a comfortable ride on unpaved roads and in light off-road scenarios. Furthermore, the car has a maximum wading depth of 550 mm and has been specially strengthened below that line to eliminate the risks of short circuits, failure, and thermal runaway.

The Ultra version of the R7 has an 800V high-voltage SiC four-wheel drive system, which combines a front high-voltage asynchronous electric drive system with a rear high-voltage permanent magnet synchronous electric drive system. Delivering power of up to 365 kW, it can provide traction to overcome slopes in low-speed off-road situations.

Pre-sales of the R7 opened on September 10. Along with the dual-motor version, there are single-motor versions that use a 215 kW electric motor. The R7 features a large trunk with 837 liters of space which is extendable to 2130 ltires with the seats down. It is a relatively large car measuring in at 4956, 1981 and 1634 mm (l/w/h) with a 2950 mm wheelbase.
