Chinese media report today that Tesla will enter the Chinese car market this year with the Model S. Tesla will set up a sales company and will wholly own all its dealers in China. The first dealer will open in the capital Beijing. China-debut for the Tesla Model S is expected for the Chengdu Auto Show in September.

Electric cars are currently very unpopular in China, Chinese car buyers consider electric cars expensive and there is simply no infrastructure for charging electric cars on the road. Until that problem is solved sales of electric cars will continue to be very low. The Tesla however might very well appeal to a few wealthy geeks who can afford a charger on their driveway.
