On January 11, Deepal released the name of its first new energy hardcore off-road SUV model – Deepal G318. The G318 may cost around 300,000 yuan (~42,000 USD). Deepal is an NEV (new energy vehicle) brand from Changan founded in 2022. It has recently started sales in Thailand, aiming to sell 450,000 units globally this year.

It is worth pointing out that 318 is the name of a national highway in China. The most famous section of 318 is the Sichuan-Tibet line from Chengdu to Tibet. In recent years, it has become popular to take road trips to Tibet along this route. Perhaps this is Deepal’s inspiration for its new SUV name, targeting road trippers.

Positioned as a medium-sized SUV, the Deepal G318 has a body size of 4750/1959/1820 mm and a wheelbase of 2880 mm. According to a leaked information, the Deepal G318 is an EREV. It has a 1.5-liter engine that doesn’t transfer any toruqe to the wheels. It has two electric motors with the rated power of 35 kW and 60 kW. The peak power output has yet to be revealed. The G318 has two LFP batery variants: for 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh.

The Deepal G318 adopts the popular square shape for off-road vehicles. Its front profile is relatively square, coupled with C-shaped LED headlights, a large closed front panel, and a solid bumper in the lower surrounding area. The lower edge of the window at the D-pillar has a rising profile, matched with hidden door handles, high-clearance wheel arches, petal-shaped rims, thick tires, roof racks, and roof lights.

The rear is equipped with the iconic external spare tire of hardcore off-road vehicles. At the same time, judging from the trunk door handle design, the Deepal G318’s tailgate will adopt a side-opening form, and the taillights are also C-shaped, echoing the headlights. At the same time, the Deepal G318 will support towing and tank turn mode to let the vehicle turn 360 degrees on the spot.

Earlier, the Deepal G318 was spied in camouflage conducting winter tests in China.

At this time, the detailed powertrain specifications have not been revealed. It is only currently known that an extended-range hybrid setup will be used. Once launched, the Deepal G318 will compete directly with models such as BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5.

We’ll watch closely for more info, stay tuned!
