The Fang Cheng Bao SF EREV (range extender) off-roader from BYD got the official name in China. Now, it is called “Leopard 5” (豹5). Bearing in mind that we can translate “Fang Cheng Bao” (方程豹) as “Formula Leopard” or “Equation Leopard”, it means that BYD called their car “Leopard” twice. Will it become cooler because of this fact? Let’s see.
We will remind you that Fang Cheng Bao is the newest brand under BYD. In terms of price range, it sits between Denza and YangWang. It means that its cars will cost approximately 400,000 – 600,000 yuan (55,300 – 83,000 USD). Moreover, BYD didn’t deny or confirm the possibility of launching internationally. Fang Cheng Bao brand was internally launched in May this year. However, its first car was spied in China way earlier. It has appeared to be an EREV SUV codenamed SF. Nowadays, Fang Cheng Bao unveiled its official name. Now, it is officially “Leopard 5” (豹5, Bao 5).
More information about Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5
First, we will talk about the official name of the Fang Cheng Bao SF. It is quite quirky because the name of the Fang Cheng Bao (方程豹) brand can be translated both as “Formula Leopard” and “Equation Leopard”. It means that the SF is called leopard twice: 方程豹豹5 (Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5, Formula Leopard Leopard 5). Why has BYD come up with this naming? We are not sure.
Now, we will remind you some facts about the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5. It is an EREV (range extender) off-road SUV with a body length of 5 meters. It has a blocky design with a flat windshield, a high bonnet line, huge side view mirrors and wide wheel arches. Inside, the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 got a huge floating screen for the driver, another screen for the front passenger, and the set of physical buttons in the center tunnel. This car is also equipped with an HUD. We would like to underline that the Leopard 5 is a five-seat car.
As for its powertrain, the Leopard 5 stands on the DM-o hybrid platform. It is the most powerful BYD’s hybrid platform which is more efficient than DM-i and DM-p ones. According to different sources, its power output will reach 500 kW (544 hp). We will remind you that electric motors will supply this power only, since the ICE here only charges the battery. The Leopard 5 will speed up from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. So, it clearly has the pace of a leopard. It has a mixed range of 1200 km (CLTC). It also has the DiSus-P suspension on board. As for the main competitors of this vehicle, they are some legacy brands.
The Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 will make its official debut in August. We will keep an eye on this car, so stay tuned!
